MAGNETIC PICK UP SENSORS

MAGNETIC PICK UP SENSORS

Magnetic Pick Up Sensors – Operation Principle & Application

A magnetic Pick Up sensor functions as an AC voltage generator.
It is typically installed near the flywheel housing of an internal combustion engine, where the starter gear teeth induce a voltage pulse each time a tooth passes the sensor tip.

Operating Principle:

  • Generates an electrical signal with each passing gear tooth.

  • Signal strength depends on rotation speed and sensor gap distance.

  • The output is used by the engine control system (ECU / PLC / SCADA) for speed, position, or rotation monitoring.

Advantages:

  • Simple, reliable design requiring no external power supply.

  • Durable under high temperature, vibration, and harsh environments.

  • Consistent performance in marine and industrial applications.

  • Easy to install and maintain.

Applications:

  • Internal combustion engines on ships or generators.

  • RPM measurement and speed control systems.

  • Rotational monitoring of shafts and mechanical drives.

  • Automation systems requiring precise motion sensing.
